Recently, I attended a workshop to study under the instruction of Roger Dale Brown.  One of the thoughts he presented was to ‘speak’ your painting to help create the mood.  He made the comparison as to God vocalizing creation “and there was light”.

As I think about this, I realize that creating a painting is very much the manner in which God created earth.  He began with the larger mass, continually breaking it down to smaller and smaller masses / details until He finished with the animals and humans…adding LIFE to creation.  Isn’t this the same way we construct a painting?  We start with the largest mass and continually break it down with smaller and smaller masses until we finally add the finishing details that bring LIFE to the painting.

This thought process brings a freedom to me in that it is a proven success.  Avoid making a MESS by following the concept of MASS. 

Perhaps you will receive the same benefit as I have, whether you are the one creating a painting or you are the one viewing a painting.  Enjoy!

Sometimes there are weeks that just float along with a quiet and easy footprint.  Other weeks seem to hail with thunderous tromping.  This past week has been of the latter type.  It was one of dropping everything that was carefully planned and attend to those in need.  How does this relate to art, I say?  And this is how I answer myself:  Art is all about life, whether that approach is happy, sad, realistic, impressionistic, abstract...and the list goes on.  Our everyday occurrences profoundly impact our creative interpretations.  When we think we are in control, we find again, that we are not.  It is these moments that we need to stop and really search for the beautiful details of those thunderous footsteps and prepare to be influenced by the beauty of even the difficult days.
